Raising awareness for Type 1 Diabetes, correcting misconceptions, & bringing unity to the type 1 community
Misconception #1 – People that have Type 1 Diabetes can’t have sugar.
Correction – Everyone, including people with Type 1 Diabetes should eat a well balanced diet. People with Type 1 Diabetes CAN have sugar because they cover it with insulin.
Misconception #2 – Only sugar raises blood glucose levels.
Correction – ALL carbohydrates raise blood glucose levels and sugar is a carbohydrate.
Misconception #3 – Someone can outgrow Type 1 Diabetes.
Correction – There is no cure for Type 1 Diabetes therefore someone can not outgrow it.
Misconception #4 – Someone can get Type 1 Diabetes by eating too much sugar.
Correction – Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing beta cells that are located in the pancreas. It is believed that genetic and environmental triggers are involved in someone getting Type 1 Diabetes. Someone can not get Type 1 Diabetes by eating too much sugar. There is no way to prevent Type 1 Diabetes and there is no cure.
Misconception #5 – Someone’s Type 1 Diabetes can get better.
Correction – There is no cure for Type 1 Diabetes.
